MOZAMBIQUE MISSIONS REPORT
By Pastor John Maziri

Vincent Nyariki and I have for the first three months (October to December) concentrated our energies on learning Portuguese. Along with that, we have also been working with the Youngsons Church, doing a lot of evangelism especially on door to door witnessing which led to a water baptism on the 31st of December. We have also been doing spiritual mapping though the city and the environs.

We have also been preaching and creating awareness of what we are doing in various churches and creating rapport with the pastors and all the church leaders.

We have also been holding prayers for the needy people and the sick. On one of those occasions, we prayed for one man who had been bewitched by her mother since he’s childhood and as a consequence, he could not leave the house for whatever reason, even in search for employment. It is a common cultural belief here that for every family, one man must remain at home “must be tied at home with the parents”. We praise the Lord because this man got delivered after we prayed for him. Following that he was employed by one of the biggest companies in Beira where he is now working.

We have also had opportunities in offering counseling services to families as part of evangelism. One lady that we took to the VCT was found to be HIV+. We offered he home-based care but unfortunately she soon passed away leaving behind four children without a father.

What next?
We are now planning on soon starting a church. We will begin with a small fellowship starting March 2007 and we hope to officially launch a church on the 20th of May 2007. We are organizing a crusade within the same month. We have found a house to rent for the fellowship for which we will be required to pay a monthly rent of 10,000mtn (US$392). We also intend to purchase furniture (chairs and a table) that will cost approximately 6,000mtn (US$235). We hope to have had a membership of 500 by May (or for a miracle) so as to be able to register the church.

We are also hoping to start Bible and leadership training courses for the church leaders. We have noted and even they have confessed to be lacking in this area and they desire to be trained. We already have 30 pastors who are ready to be trained.

The other issue that is of priority is on managing HIV/AIDS. It was recently announced in the local media here that HIV/AIDS has increased by 30%. The most affected, according to the media sources, are the women. Expectant women are even more vulnerable.

Other diseases that are a major concern are the waterborne diseases, malaria and skin infections. It is also quite risky and expensive for a foreigner to be treated in Mozambique.

Floods are also a major concern. Several people are affected due to floods. We are also experiencing strange winds with a velocity of 200 to 240 km/hr. This is very dangerous because many building have come tumbling down.

We desired to begin teaching English commercially as a way of raising income for the mission work that we will be doing here. However, we have discovered that there are already many schools offering that and they already have issues with payments. This therefore cannot support the ministry here. We are hence praying for new direction in this area.
