Kakuma
The base situated next to Kakuma refugee camp, offers certificate and diploma courses in leadership and discipleship. Other activities in the base include missions training, children ministry, evangelism and food distribution.
Ephraim Children’s Ministry, which operates within the Kakuma base, feeds the Turkana children of the arid Northern Kenya and plans are under way to develop an orphanage in a plot in Kakuma to provide food, a home, education and spiritual nourishment to these children.
KAKUMA NEWS JANUARY 2011
The Youth in Kakuma are experiencing wonderful positive transformation. Through seminars, retreats and counseling sessions, many young people have begun making changes in their lives.
TEENAGE MARRIAGES
Usually, after finishing their primary school education, the young people are usually booked for marriage, or they just don’t want to go on to high school. Even when they had sponsors, they still would not go to school.
But now they are going to school, and those who don’t have sponsors wish they had sponsors (you can come in here and help!).
Those who have already gotten married are leaving their children at home with their grandparents, and resuming school! A happily proud husband has said, “Now my wife is married to a form four candidate not a class eight candidate!” (Smile.)
UPCOMING COUNSELORS
The happy youths have decided to follow in the footsteps of our Kakuma Base staff members, and they now want to become counselors. They accompany the missionaries to schools and retreats counseling and influencing their own community members towards positive change, and having focused lives.
COME WE STAY MARRIAGES
This has been a common practice, even among pastors! Then after the 3 month discipline period, they are allowed to continue with the marriage. However, this is swiftly changing, as now they are learning the pure, right and godly way to go about marriage. We give all glory to God!!
NEW MINISTRY VENTURES
Usually, the outreach in Kakuma has been done in the morning, but most people usually go out to work and look for food. Now, the approach is changing, and we shall begin doing outreaches in the evenings, so that we reach those who have not yet been reached.
KIBAKI AND RAILA WE KNOW, BUT WHO IS JESUS?
Also, some areas of Kakuma, especially the forest areas, have not been sufficiently covered. A team from Nairobi accompanied us there once, and when they went to preach, they were very discouraged. “We know Kibaki and Raila, but who is Jesus?” is one of the questions that got them really discouraged. “How do you do it,” they wondered. Even Sunday school was a tough one to handle for them!
Clearly, many laborers are needed for this gospel to be well spread….the harvest is ready, where are the laborers? They are not few, they have been called….but are refusing to go….will you go?
